Goodwood Aerodrome, Friday August 8th, 2025

Twelve Guild members attended our visit to Goodwood Aerodrome on Friday 8th August. The visit this year was hosted by Matt Colebrook, the Aerodrome Operations Manager.
Once again blessed by good weather we had a very enjoyable and productive day. Arriving at 10am to the sound of cars tearing around the racetrack surrounding the airfield, we were given a safety briefing by Matt in the Aero Club.
Matt had very kindly positioned three light aircraft outside the GA hangars for us to sketch/paint: a 1948 Stinson 108 Station Wagon, a 1945 Piper L-4 ‘Grasshopper’ and a Carbon Cub (a modern, re-engineered Super Cub). The last two made a particularly interesting comparison parked nose-to-nose.
Starting cloudy, the sun emerged after lunch and we tracked the shadows as they moved across the grass during the afternoon. As well as the two-seat Spitfire, whose flights provided a noisy but welcome distraction, a pristine silver T6 Harvard G-TEXN flew in and parked on the apron.
All too soon it was time to regroup in the Aero Club for a review of the day’s work. Thanks to Richard Wheatland for leading the critique. I did manage to finish my gouache painting of the Stinson at home, a few days after our visit.
A huge thank you to Matt and the Goodwood team for looking after us so well and making us so welcome.
